The past experience of NSS is quite heartening. It has provided diversified opportunities to our students to develop their personality through community service.
The broad objectives of NSS are to :
- Understand the community in which they work
- Understand themselves in relation to their community
- Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process
- Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
- Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems
- Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities
- Gain skills in mobilizing community participation
- Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude
- Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
- Practice national integration and social harmony
Classification of NSS Programme
NSS activities has been divided into two major groups – regular NSS activities and special camping programme. Regular NSS activity: Under this, students undertake various programmes in the adopted villages, college / school campuses and urban slums during weekends or after college hours. Special Camping Programme: Under this, camps of 10 days duration are organized in adopted villages or urban slums during vacations with some specific projects by involving local communities. 50% NSS volunteers are expected to participate in these camps.
Relief and Rehabilitation work during Natural Calamities
These programmes would enable the students to understand and share the agonies of the people affected in the wake of natural calamities like cyclone, flood, etc. The main emphasis should be on their participation in programmes, and working with the people to overcome their handicaps, and assisting the local authorities in relief and rehabilitation work in the wake of natural calamities. The NSS students can be involved in: assisting the authorities in distribution of rations, medicine, clothes, etc., assisting the health authorities in inoculation and immunization, supply of medicine, etc.,assisting and working with local authorities in relief and rescue operations, collection of clothes and other materials, and sending the same to the affected areas.
Special Camping programme is a camp of seven days duration in adopted places and it provides unique opportunities to the students for group living, collective experience sharing, sharing responsibilities, addressing various developmental issues of regional and national importance and constant interaction with the community. 50 percentage NSS volunteers are expected to participate in these camps.
In order to promote inter-faith, inter-community and inter-personal understanding, willing NSS volunteers maybe encouraged to undergo this experience of home stay in a host family and share their experiences with the rest of the campers.
NSS volunteer who has completed 240 hours of regular activities in the period of two years and attended one annual special camp, will be issued an NSS certificate by the Ministry of Human Resources Development. In case, a volunteer does not fulfill the above condition and has to miss the GOI certificate, the college authorities may issue a certificate to the NSS volunteer.
